That's not me.  (I'm over here.)  It's Xerxes in her best Sunday dress.
This week she has been reading Owen Gingerich's God's Universe.
 
 
Gingerich is a prominent crossover figure working in both the history of science and religion,
and this little volume is a pleasant and popular contribution the dialogue between these two fields.
 
From the Epilogue:  "Ours is a world of love and ecstatic joy,
but also a world of suffering and excruciating pain.
It is not a world of all or none, but a dappled world, where
chance and randomness join with choice and inexorable law."
 
Gingerich borrows the notion of a dappled world from Nancy Cartwright who, in turn,
borrows it from Gerard Manley Hopkins's poem Pied Beauty:
 
Glory be to God for dappled things --
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches' wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced -- fold, fallow, and plough;
And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.
