That's not me.  (I'm over here.)  It's Xerxes in her best Sunday dress.
This week she has been reading Mervyn Peake's Boy in Darkness.
 
 
Xerxes happened upon this (hard-to-find) horror novella by the brilliant and
oh-so-peculiar author of the haunting and massive Gormenghast trilogy.  Poor Titus.
 
 
"The ceremonies were over for the day.  The boy was tired out.  Ritual, like a senseless
chariot, had rolled its wheels -- and the natural life of the day was bruised and crushed."
 
"There is a kind of laughter that sickens the soul.  Laughter when it is out of control:
when it screams and stamps its feet, and sets the bells jangling in the next town.
