XERXES

That's not me.  (I'm over here.)  It's Xerxes in her best Sunday dress.
This week she has been reading Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist.

After posting on Coelho's The Devil and Miss Prym eight weeks ago,
Xerxes thought she would give another of his (very-fast-read) novels a go,
and she selected the wildly-popular The Alchemist.  She knows now why it is
wildly popular and she can see what attracts so many people to its theme, but
she just can't bring herself to agree with some of what others find so inspiring.

An example of that:

"When a person really desires something, all the universe
conspires to help that person realize his dream."

Still, she did like pieces of the story.  Here's an example of that:

"What's the world's greatest lie?" the boy asked, completely surprised.  "It's this:
that at a certain point in our lives we lose control of what's happening to us,
and our lives become controlled by fate.  That's the world's greatest lie."

And another:

"The boy went back to contemplating the silence of the desert, and the sand
raised by the animals.  "Everyone has his or her own way of learning things,"
he said to himself.  "His way isn't the same as mine, nor mine as his.  But
we're both in search of our Personal Legends, and I respect him for that."
