What's happening today?
Feb 6 to April 1, 1998.
Hats off to the Lodestar crew!, who finished their work at Western on Feb. 13th. After sweeping the shield, a more-or-less uniform interior field of 275 nT was measured. We will in the near future provide some additional information about this process, and how the field has evolved as equipment is added to the room. The remaining tasks (installing wiring, power outlets, lights, and carpet) were handled by the WWU physical plant, and the paleomag group. The top photo shows the wiring in progress. Aluminum wiremold is used as a wire conduit. Note that many of the original steel screws and fasteners in the wiremold, power outlets, and track lights were replaced with brass or stainless steel parts. The middle photo shows the lighting system, and the bottom picture is looking at the carpet, out of the shield door. In the background, just outside the door, is the crate containing our new KLY-3S Stepper-Kappabridge! Stay tuned for more details...
What is it?
- The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
- This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.
