WWU Paleomagnetism Lab
Lodestar Magnetics Field-Free Room
What is it?
  • The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
  • This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.

What's happening today?
Jan 22, 1998.
The first day of construction. The WWU Paleomagnetism Lab is on the 4th floor. The room has been cleared out, and awaits Western's physical plant to finish prepping the floor. For seismic safety, the wooden sleeper beams that support the 11,000 lbs of the field-free room will be glued to the floor, directly over the concrete beams. This way, when the big 'quake comes, the folks in the lab on the 3rd floor might not get squished!
