Lodestar Magnetics Field-Free Room

Now you can email Gary Scott and the crew! email to: lodestar@geol.wwu.edu

What's happening today?
Feb 3, 1998.
The interior of the room is being finished. The inside shield has three layers of electrical steel (in the top photo, "big-Bruce" is cutting one of the sheets to size). Today the floor and ceiling parts of the shield have been finished up, and work has started on the walls. In the middle, Gary is helping Joe hold things up. The bottom photo shows the "time trap", to be filled tomorrow. Stay tuned...

What is it?

  • The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
  • This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.
