What's happening today?
Feb 4, 1998.
Today was devoted to high ceremony, as the time capsule between the inner and outer shields was filled and sealed. Momentos from the Lodestar crew and the folks here at Western were included for posterity. All involved signed the last sheet of electrical steel (using non-magnetic ink, naturally!), and the sheet was nailed in place. Fun was had by all. Tomorrow and Friday will be devoted to finishing the inner shielding, then it looks like most of the Lodestar crew will be finished...
What is it?
- The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
- This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.
