WWU Paleomagnetism Lab
Lodestar Magnetics Field-Free Room
What is it?
  • The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
  • This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.

What's happening today?
Jan 23, 1998.
The second day of construction. While Gary and "Big-Bruce" discuss today's plans in the background, the sheet metal team from WWU's Physical Plant contemplates their next move as they work to install the ventilation ducts. The top picture shows the sleepers glued into place on the floor. These wood-composite beams will distribute the shield's load over the floor beams, and are glued in place for seismic safety. After the glue has set, the first part of the floor is then completed. The second photo shows the finished plywood sub-floor, with Gary pointing out to Bruce that it's all ready for the electrical steel.
