WWU Paleomagnetism Lab
Lodestar Magnetics Field-Free Room
What is it?
  • The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
  • This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.

What's happening today?
Jan 24, 1998.
Work is picking up on day three. The south wall of the room will be 4 inches from the wall of the paleomagnetism lab, and so this wall will be built first. The framing and two layers of electrical steel were completed early this morning, and at about lunch time the south outer wall was lifted into place. The top photo shows the nearly-finished south wall, with Gary and the two Bruces screwing the outer layer of plywood to the sheet steel and underlying studs. (note the view is roughly from the NNE looking towards the SSW). The bottom photo shows the south wall after it has been lifted into place. Sunday will be a day off for the crew, so stay tuned until the next up-date on Monday...
