What's happening today?
Jan 27, 1998.
Late yesterday afternoon, the floor joists and seismic supports were finished, so now it's on to the inner-layer floor. In the top photo, our intrepid crew begins laying down the plywood flooring. After all the plywood is nailed down ("Big-Bruce" is preparing the nail-gun for this in the bottom photo), the room is ready for 3 layers of electrical steel. This inner layer of steel will be screwed down to the plywood sheets, then covered with another layer of plywood flooring.
What is it?
- The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
- This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.
