WWU Paleomagnetism Lab
Lodestar Magnetics Field-Free Room

Now you can email Gary Scott and the crew! email to: lodestar@geol.wwu.edu

What's happening today?
Jan 28, 1998.
With a full crew in place, the pace of construction has picked up a bit. Early today the West and North outer walls are being finished and nailed into place. In the top photo, you can see the finished West wall in place, while the studs for the North wall are being installed. In the bottom photo you can see the North wall is nearly finished. After the plywood is firmly nailed down, the wall will be ready to raise into place. Later today the steel of the inner layer of the floor will be hauled from the basement.

What is it?

  • The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
  • This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.
