What's happening today?
Jan 29, 1998.
Today a lot of the exterior work has been accomplished. By the afternoon, all four of the outer walls are up. The top photo shows the North wall in place, awaiting construction of the Eastern wall. The second photo shows the interior of the room (looking West), to give you a good idea of how the electrical steel looks. The third photo shows all four walls in place. Note the door in the Eastern wall. Now that the exterior (save the roof) is largely done, I'll have to move to an interior vantage point to depict further construction progress. The bottom photo shows Joe hard at work on the interior wall frames. Watch that crack, though!
What is it?
- The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
- This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.
