WWU Paleomagnetism Lab
Lodestar Magnetics Field-Free Room

Now you can email Gary Scott and the crew! email to: lodestar@geol.wwu.edu

What's happening today?
Jan 30, 1998.
The outer top wall (or roof, if you like) has been put up today, along with a great deal of the interior studs and braces. The top photo shows a view through the door, looking in on the interior work. In the bottom two photos, you can see what it is like to work on the field-free room's roof. In the foreground, behind the fingers and the giant blue drill, you can see Russ Burmester hard at work, with Bruce D. barely visible in the darkness beyond. After working in this cramped space, the crew needs some time off. Tomorrow they will go to Orcas Island, tagging along with a Geophysics seminar class. After helping drill holes in the Nanaimo Group, the Lodestar crew will spend a relaxing evening at the Doe Bay hot springs...

What is it?

  • The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
  • This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.
