What's happening today?
Feb 2, 1998.
After a relaxing weekend on Orcas Island, work resumed on Groundhog Day. Today was spent cleaning (with both vacuums and magnets) the outer shield, and getting ready to start installing the inner layer of shields. Holes were also cut in the walls for vent ducts and electical conduit. In this photo you can see Joe and Bruce screwing around inside the room. Bruce also shows that he can drill and vacuum at the same time!

What is it?

  • The magnetostatic shield (a.k.a. "field-free room") provides a low-magnetic field environment in which detailed measurements of the magnetism of rocks can be made.
  • This page will be updated daily, so you can see how these things are built. When the project is finished (mid-Feb., 1998), an animation of these photos will be put together for your viewing pleasure.
