Research
I have a number of active research projects. Most focus on tree rings or carbon cycling in some way. I'm an ecologist by training and inclination although the only society I belong to is the American Geophysical Union. I'm fundamentally interested in landscape ecology (space), paleoecology (time), and how climate shapes ecosystems over decades to centuries. My lab work tends to involve dendrochronology (tree rings) and geographic information science. Here are some of the projects I'm working on now.
- Dendroclimatology of Ancient Bristlecone Pine. We are trying to bring the tools of landscape ecology to bear on un-mixing temperature and precipitation to better understand bristlecone pine growth.
- The Greening of the Boreal Forest. We are trying to understand how the boreal forest is responding to climate and how global carbon cycles might respond in turn.
- dplR. I've written a package for doing dendrochronological analyses in R.
- The Polaris Project is a collaborative effort by several universities and the Woods Hole Research Center. The press release describing it is here. The project includes a field course and research experience for undergraduate students in the Siberian Arctic.
Prospective graduate students should look here.
