I am a Professor of Biology and Assistant Director, Shannon Point Marine Center, at Western Washington University. Before my appointment at WWU as an Assistant Professor in 1990 I was a post-doctoral research associate at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (University of Maryland) and at the University of Nebraska. I teach courses in Algae, Botany, Introductory Biology, Oceanography, and Symbiosis, advise undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) research related to my expertise in algal symbiosis, and help coordinate education programs at Shannon Point Marine Center. I have also served as science advisor for marine science films produced for the general public by the BBC (Blue Planet Series) and MacGillivray Freeman Films (Coral Reef Adventure).
