The Center for Service-Learning (CSL) and our community partners provide mutually beneficial opportunities for students that enhance their academic learning, as well as their civic commitment. Community partners appreciate service-learning because it strengthens their capacity, allowing them to accomplish valuable projects that they typically don't have the time or resources for.

Some examples of service-learning projects that have assisted community partners are:

  • Developing marketing plans
  • Creating database programs
  • Planning fundraising events
  • Designing newsletter templates
  • Writing policy manuals
  • Developing a competitive analysis of nonprofit organizations

Students who participate in service-learning bring new energy and fresh ideas to their projects. They often go above and beyond the call of duty and leave an indelible footprint. Many of our students have become volunteers for the community partners they have worked with, and some have also become employees.

"We worked with Dr. Mary Sass at the College of Business & Economics on a project that spanned two quarters. Her service-learning students helped us conduct both a qualitative and quantitative survey on how our partner agencies viewed the Whatcom Volunteer Center (WVC) and the services we provide. Working with the students and a consultant, we learned that there were some very basic, core elements at WVC that needed improving - information we wouldn't have without the help of this service-learning class. The students were eager, motivated, and very capable. They brought a new level of energy and enthusiasm to the project.

I value the relationship the university has with the community and their commitment to service. When non-profit organizations have the opportunity to partner with the university on these types of projects, great things happen."
