Christopher Wise - Brief Bio
Christopher Wise was born in Enid, Oklahoma in 1961. He grew up in Oklahoma and Southern California. In 1984, Wise earned his B.A. in Literature and French from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, also studying for a year in Paris, France. In 1986, Wise earned his M.A. in English from the University of Oklahoma. In 1992, he earned his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Riverside. His doctoral dissertation, entitled "The Marxian Hermeneutics of Fredric Jameson," was directed by Georg M. Gugelberger. In 1994, he was appointed Assistant Professor of English at the University of West Georgia, specializing in Third World Literatures. In 1996, he was appointed Assistant Professor of English at Western Washington University, specializing in Global Literatures. That same year, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach at the Université de Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. Wise was promoted to Associate Professor and awarded tenure at Western Washington University in 2000. From 2001 to 2003, Wise taught and developed American and Islamic Studies at the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan on Fulbright awards. Wise was promoted to Professor of English at Western Washington University in 2006. He is married and has four children.
