Professional Experience

 

·          26 years employment in education, environmental research, planning, and community development.

·          Academic Program Director, Huxley College’s environmental studies and sciences degree program on Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas.

·          Teach environmental, planning, and related courses as Visiting Associate Professor at Huxley College of the Environment, Western Washington University, for seven years. Serve on graduate student committees. 

·          Design, conduct, and supervise research, planning, and management projects, through WWU and as a consultant.

·          As consultant, work internationally carrying out a wide range of tasks in project design, coordination, and supervision, and in planning, research, training, policy development, and institutional strengthening.  Projects focus on environmental research and monitoring, environmental and social impact assessment, parks and wildlife agencies, community-based planning, sustainable land use, and tourism.  Employers include international development agencies, national, state, and local governments, private land owners, non-profit environmental and community development organizations, and Native American organizations.

·          Recent civic service: Greenway Advisory Committee, City of Bellingham. Steering Committee, Parks and Recreation Master Plan, Bellingham. Board of Trustees, Waldorf Association of Whatcom County.

 

Projects and Research

 

·          Project manager, assisting Olympic National Park to plan and organize consortium to conduct comprehensive ecosystem and social science research and education program for Elwha River watershed.  (Ongoing)

·          Principal investigator, review of environmental implications of management policy for protected areas and surrounding lands in US/Canada North Cascades transboundary region.

·          Project manager, study of outdoor recreation land base, policy, and management issues in Cascade Foothills region of Washington state, and preparation of strategy and action recommendations.

·          Ecologist/planner on World Bank teams developing projects to strengthen national parks and wildlife agencies and policies in Zimbabwe and Kenya.

·          Drafted systems for national park planning and monitoring, and individual park management plans, in Zimbabwe and Kenya.

·          Developed community-based ecotourism development plans for rural communities, Native Village Corporations, and University land management office, in various regions of Alaska.

·          Member of team that prepared comprehensive policy and strategy for new Kenya Wildlife Service.

·          Drafted national protected areas system plan and policy (including planning process), Jamaica.

·          Designed cultural resources management plan for a Native American Indian nation.

·          Designed and supervised World Bank project supporting Kenya’s environmental and land resource monitoring agency and GIS facility.

·          Assessed environmental impact of a major irrigation scheme, Kenya.

·          Reviewed status of environmental policies and management and contributed to national environmental action plans in several African countries (Nigeria, Swaziland, Rwanda, Madagascar) for the World Bank and US AID.

·          Conducted visitor surveys, Upper Skagit Bald Eagle Festival, Lake Padden Park (Bellingham).
