ESCI 430: Limnology
Fall Quarter

Writing Assignments

You will be responsible for six (6) written assignments through the course of the quarter. Assignments will be made on Friday and will be due at the end of class the following Friday at one-week intervals beginning on 29 September so nine (9) assignments will be made. The first assignment is mandatory; you can select the other five from the remaining eight. Three or four students will volunteer or be selected each week to present their summary to the class. Assignments will relate to topics discussed during lecture and will take the form of a summary of a scientific article. The summary should include the title of the paper, the reason the study was performed, how it was performed, what the outcome was, and what the relevance of this work is to other research.

Your summary should be approximately one and a half to two pages double-spaced in 12-point font size. Attach a copy of the scientific abstract from the journal article.

Criteria for grading are content, organization, clarity, and demonstration of comprehension of the subject material. I expect you to write in your finest technical style, and I expect full, correctly formatted scientific citations to be used as the title. The style to be used is as follows:

Brandenburg, A.M., and C.S. Eaton. 1995. How I spent my summer at the lake. Limnology and Oceanography 45:103-119.

Authors are to be separated by commas, last name first for first author only and initials only for first and middle names of all authors. Authors, date, title, and journal are all followed by periods. The title is in lower case except for the first letter and proper names. The journal title is spelled out in full, and significant words of the journal title begin with capital letters. The journal title is followed by the volume, not the issue number, a colon, and then the inclusive page numbers.
