The focus of my work has been this process of meaning-making, which I have defined as reflecting on a past experience to connect some aspect of that experience to a new understanding of oneself. One of the cornerstones of my research is that meaning-making and narrative construction often occur in social contexts (e.g., McLean, Pasupathi, & Pals, 2007). Memory telling may be a particularly potent context for identity development because a listener's response to a memory has the potential to challenge the teller's perspectives on the memory, and to signal meanings that are accepted or resisted by valued communities. For example, I have examined the “tellability” of certain kinds of events, such as transgressions and traumas (Pasuapathi, McLean, & Weeks, in press), as well as how these kinds of events are managed in relation to wisdom and well-being (Mansfield, McLean, & Lilgendahl, in preparation). Finally, my previous research has found that parents serve as audiences in earlier adolescence, often for the function of emotion regulation, and peers are audiences at later ages, often for the function of intimacy development (McLean, 2005); thus, parents and peers serve different functions in helping to story the self.
